Oregano Oil
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a culinary and medicinal herb native to the Mediterranean and belonging to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It has small, aromatic leaves and clusters of purple or pink flowers. Oregano has a long history of use in culinary traditions worldwide, particularly in Mediterranean and Latin American cuisines.
Oregano has traditionally been used to aid digestion and alleviate symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and gas. Oregano tea or infusions were consumed to soothe upset stomachs and aid digestion. Oregano has also been used to support respiratory health and alleviate symptoms of coughs and colds.
Oregano is rich in phenols like carvacrol, thymol, and rosmarinic acid and flavonoids like apigenin, luteolin, and quercetin, which have strong antioxidant properties. The main healing compound found in oregano oil, carvacrol, has widespread uses ranging from antimicrobial properties to clearing the airways.
