Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica) is a perennial flowering plant native to northern Africa, North America, Asia, and Europe. It’s commonly referred to as stinging nettle due to the tiny hairs on its leaves and stems that can cause skin irritation upon contact. Nettles have serrated, heart-shaped leaves and small greenish flowers that grow in clusters. The plant typically grows in moist, nitrogen-rich soil and can reach heights of up to three feet.
Nettle Leaf has a long history of culinary and medicinal use, and virtually all parts of the plant, including the leaves, stems, and roots, are utilized for their therapeutic properties. It has been used as far back as the Bronze Age, 3000 BC, around the world. Nettle has traditionally been used as an astringent, diuretic, antihistamine, decongestant, for kidney support, and as an expectorant.
Nettle Leaf contains flavonol glycosides (especially rutin), sterols, scopoletin (isolated from the flowers), chlorophyll, carotenoids, vitamins (including B vitamins, C, and K1), minerals, and plant phenolic acids (especially chlorogenic and 2-O-caffeoylmalic acids).
Nettle Leaf has been shown in scientific studies to:
- Provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity
- Encourage a normal response to seasonal stressors
- Support healthy prostate function
- Support a healthy urinary tract
