Chaste Tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as Chasteberry or simply Vitex, is a small shrub native to the Mediterranean region and some parts of Asia. The fruit, commonly referred to as the Chaste Berry or Monk's Pepper, has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties.
Chaste Tree was traditionally used as an herbal remedy for various women’s reproductive issues, including premenstrual symptoms, irregular menstrual cycles, and symptoms related to menopause. It was also used to stimulate milk production in nursing mothers.
The Chaste Tree berry has several active constituents that contribute to its medicinal properties, including flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, diterpenes, alkaloids, and essential oils. The diterpenes vitexilactone and rotundifuran are believed to play a role in regulating hormone levels in the body.
